Once Upon a TimeTM, "LCD" did not stand for "Liquid Crystal Display", but rather "Lowest Common Denominator".
Everyone who was Anyone was worried about the general cultural drive toward the LCD. Television was in a death spiral of being more and more stupid; pop music was becoming blander and blander. Newspapers, magazines, and such were covering more glitz and less actual news.
If you're cynical, you can say that this is still going on.
But really, cable television increased the number of nationwide network niches by a factor of at least fifty, and the internet is pretty much devoted to providing outlets which have nothing to do with any "common" denominator.
I won't say what I tripped across today to make this observation.
But tell you what! Leave a link to your best guess in the comments!
"What have you seen recently which is the opposite of the Lowest Common Denominator?"
