County Attorney Orders Stop on Same-Sex Marriage Licenses
Aug 31, 2007 12:50 PM
Des Moines, IA - The Polk County Attorney has ordered no more marriage licenses will be approved today for gay couples. The order comes a couple hours after two men became the first gay couple ever married in Iowa. Polk County Judge Robert Hanson ruled Thursday the ban on gay marriage was unconstitutional.
This morning, Sean Fritz and Tim McQuillan, both students at Iowa State University in Ames got married. A minister who met the couple just today performedd the ceremony and told the men, "This is a legal document and you are married."
Within hours of the judge's ruling, a dozen gay couples had applied for marriage licenses. An appeal to stop same sex marriage is expected after Labor Day. Gay marriage is also legal in Massachusetts. Nine other states have approved spousal rights in some form for same-sex couples.
