Last night, I watched Josh Beckett just shut down the Angels. To coin a cliche, he was awesome. He was ahead of most batters all night long (something which may not happen if he has to face them again this series, as too many of the Angels were just taking the first pitch for Strike 1), and he went all nine innings. Which is good, as Matsuzaka has shown that he either pitches long or very short lately, so we need the bullpen in good shape.

I was a bit worried in the first inning when we couldn't manage to bat in the guys on base (after Youk's homer), but the offense looked passable for the rest of the game. "Passable" may not work in the long run. But we may not have to run long.

I really want the Yankees and Indians to beat the heck out of each other, and for the Red Sox to mop up the Angels quickly (which would mean beating them in Anaheim, which is not something they've allowed many teams to do).

I am not worried in the slightest about any team from the Senior Citizen Circuit.

Tim Wakefield is not well.

I know that no pitcher wants to miss a start, but he really should. He missed a game or two with a sore back, but giving up eight (8) runs to the Devil Rays should really convince him that he's not well yet. After getting a decision in his first 26 starts, he now has two starts since the injury where he couldn't get to the 4th inning.

So we're down 8 to 1.

Make that 8 to 5.

No, 9 to 5.

9 to 8.

9 to 9.

9 to 9, bases loaded, no outs, and Kevin Youklis at bat.

Now, with a bases-clearing triple, we're up 12 to 9.

13 to 9. Coco Crisp bats in Youk.

14 to 9. Coco himself scores.

15 to 9. Big Papi hits a home run.

16 to 9. J.D. Drew hits a home run.

We bring back Eric Gagne for the end of the game, and true to his end-of-career form, he gives up another run. But by now, that's just a post-script.

Can we have two of our runs from tonite and apply them to the game before?

No-No

I come home from a party that [livejournal.com profile] shadesong and [livejournal.com profile] yendi held for their lovely daughter and her friends, who now include [livejournal.com profile] alyveritya and my younger. [livejournal.com profile] persis also showed up with her daughter, so much high-pitched giggling and the like was heard about the house.

But when I come home, I check on the Red Sox, who are beating the Orioles 4-0 in the 6th. I cheer as the Sox put up another four runs, which pretty much nails the coffin shut on the Birds. But then the line score is displayed, and I see that the Orioles haven't gotten a hit all game!

(Wait a minute. Don't we have a rookie just called up from the minors pitching tonite?)

Yes, we do. Clay Buchholz did pitch earlier this year for the major club, beating the Angels earlier in August and looking pretty good doing it. But then he was back down to the minors, until Tim Wakefield pulled a muscle in his back (and, of course, the September call-ups expand all major-league team rosters from 25 players to 40).

This is his second major-league start ever.

And man, he looked good. His fast-ball was just "okay"; 92 mph looks outstanding in the minors, but is just a typical fast-ball in the majors. But he was landing his change-up wherever he wanted it, and his 12->6 curve-ball was just evil.

He struck out 9, and that ain't hay either. And he did it to the club who battered every pitcher we threw at them the night before.

There may be no crying in baseball, but the young man was in tears when "Clay Buchholz, No-Hitter" was beamed up on the scoreboard. And nobody in Fenway's 371st consecutive sell-out blamed him one bit.
