Thanksgiving Week-End Notes
Nov. 27th, 2006 01:10 pmDespite being the first Thanksgiving since 1991 where
tamidon didn't cook it for us and a few dozen of our closest friends, it was okay. Her mother did a more-than-passable job cooking, and both
tamidon and her mother picked apart the various recipes and their various levels of success.
My kids played Monopoly several times there, and a couple of times at home after we got back. Even my younger won a game outright (as I don't believe in "letting them win"). The only problem is that it's a little too long a game for their attention-span, which means that they start acting up and getting silly. But they seem to understand that, and don't ask to play unless they're willing to ride out the hour-and-a-half it takes to complete it.
The cat was willing to go hungry rather than eat the dry food. This may prove to be a problem.
I can recommend AC/DC: The Savage Tale of the First Standards War by Tom McNichol. It's a fast read, it contrasts the tactics taken by Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse in establishing the standard (it got brutal, especially for stray dogs), and it's exactly the kind of history which should be taught in American high schools but never is.
"Buy-Nothing Day" proved to be a dismal failure, as sales on "Black Friday" were up 6% over last year. I did notice that a large number of media referred to it as "Black Friday", tho.
