Anti-American Activity
Sep. 30th, 2006 05:17 pmI should be furious about the Banana Republic bill, passed this week by the Senate and House, and undoubtedly on its way to the Oval Office for Dubya to scrawl his 'X' on. I should be livid that habeas corpus can be suspended for anybody who can't instantly prove that they're a citizen, which pretty much means everybody.
Instead, I'm just tired.
I'm tired of a Senate which falls for the same old propaganda line, "If you're not with us, you're against us". I'm tired of an Executive Branch which considers itself to be the nation. And I'm tired of the complete and utter ignorance of how government is supposed to behave on the part of Americans.
Look at the latest poll: 42% of Americans believe that the President is driving gasoline prices down as an election-year ploy. Forget the lack of hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico this year, forget the relative calm in Iran (especially as their wing-nut holocaust-denying president comes out as the voice of reason in the latest papal foot-in-mouth debacle), forget the end-of-summer-driving and downturn in airplane travel (thanks to the stupid "liquids on a plane" scare). Forget even that we're shifting from summer-mix gasoline (which is high on ethanol) to winter-mix. The drop in the price of gasoline must be another Dubya plot!!!1!!!eleven!1!
I'm feeling so cynical, I'm drawing consolation from the fact that such a huge segment of the population distrusts the president to that extent. If they weren't going to think anyway, they may as well direct their ignorance at a worthy target.
So what to do? Perhaps it's time to support the ACLU again. Anyone else searching out victims of this idiotic law to help get it overturned?
