Okay, everybody has awards, except for films which actually made money. Then again, there weren't many of those this year.

And because there weren't many of those, Hollywood is pretending to be as poor as New Orleans. And this year, instead of "piracy", they're blaming the audience waiting for the DVDs to come out.

This point was made by the president of the Academy of Motion Picture Farts and Scientologists, and repeated at least twice by actors who could stick to the script.

This, of course, was disingenuous in the extreme. There are many films which would have lost money if it weren't for their subsequent release on DVD. There are also many films which require a whole screen to see properly, and to drive that point home, they showed a montage of such spectacular films.

On television. To millions of viewers.

Way to go, drones.

There is an excellent 6-page article in the IEEE Spectrum this month about the changed nature of warfare:

Asymmetric Warfare: a Primer

Relevant excerpt from the conclusion:

It was a force that rapidly defeated a major Iraqi force and a scattered Taliban force with minimal U.S. losses. However, it is designed to fight against other military forces; it is neither designed for nor capable of countering a determined insurgency.

Overall, one ruefully concludes that it is unlikely there is a military or a military-technical solution to the low-tech asymmetric warfare in Iraq.
